Our First Durian 7 June 2010

This is Durian. It is a strange and unusual fruit found here in Southeast Asia. See it's uncanny resemblence to a medieval mace used by Knights to bludgeon people??? Some may argue that while the outside looks lethal what is inside is equally lethal. Durian is much loved here. If you have ever traveled in this part of the world you most likely have seen, heard of Durian or smelled it. It is unforgettable and unmistakable. And if you are a truly adventurous soul you have probably eaten Durian.

As you can see by the expressions on the faces of the kids we had some varied reactions to Durian. Rob likes it, Olea will usually try anything strong smelling or tasting, Isabel utterly refused, Aerin tried it but plugged her nose the whole time and Ethan ran screaming from the balcony in terror! I thought it was okay. Not something I crave like amazing, delicious mangoes.
Durian is unlike any fruit found in the US. Some have compared it's smell to garlic and stinky gym socks. That doesn't quite fit the bill for me. The smell is so strong and lasts A LONG TIME. Most hotels here have a very strict NO DURIAN policy. It has a mushy texture and is a little stringy. The fruit is inside little sections of the out shell and inside the soft fruit is a large seed.
So if you ever get the chance, try Durian and let me know what you think!
Kirsten
